Why Jewelry Tarnishes — and What Actually Prevents It
When a customer sends photos of a green wrist or a flaking ring, the first assumption is always the same: the gold was too thin. Sometimes that is true. More often, the problem happened before the piece ever reached the plating tank.
Three different failures, usually confused
Buyers routinely mix up three things that have different causes, different looks and different fixes:
- Tarnishing — surface oxidation that changes color, most typical on silver. It can be cleaned and restored.
- Plating wear — the coating wears through at friction points like the inside of a ring or a clasp, exposing the base metal.
- Plating failure — blistering or peeling. This is not about thickness. It is an adhesion problem.
These three need completely different standards of judgment, and treating them as one problem leads to wrong conclusions — and wrong supplier decisions.
The real cause of adhesion failure: what happens before plating
Before a piece is plated it has to be degreased, cleaned and activated. These steps produce no visible result, which is exactly why they are the first thing cut when cost pressure arrives. When surface preparation is skipped, oils remain on the base metal, the coating cannot bond, and the gold layer — however thick — blisters off in sheets.
There is a simple pass/fail check used on plating lines: after rinsing, the water film should shrink back evenly and continuously. If it beads into droplets, oil is still on the surface and the piece goes back. It needs no equipment. You can watch it from the edge of the line.
Why "how many microns" misses the point
Thickness only matters for the wear category of failure. It has almost nothing to do with blistering and peeling. Three questions are worth more than a micron number:
- What is the under-layer structure — is there a barrier layer that stops the base metal diffusing outward?
- Is surface preparation checked on every batch?
- What color-retention expectation applies, and under what wearing conditions?
Each material fails differently
- Gold-plated brass — a coating system; failure lives in the coating.
- 316L stainless steel — the PVD layer bonds at a molecular level with the base metal, so it wears far better.
- S925 silver — silver itself oxidizes and darkens. That is a material property, not a quality defect, and it cleans off.
That last point matters more than it looks: many buyers treat normal silver oxidation as a quality complaint, when the honest answer is that silver tarnishes by design.
Three checks you can run yourself
- Wear test — have someone wear the piece daily for two weeks and check the friction points.
- Perspiration test — simulate close-to-skin wearing conditions.
- Edge inspection — recesses and edges of complex shapes are where coating is thinnest. Look there first.
What This Means for Your Order
Do not open with "how many microns". Ask instead: what happens before plating, and is it checked on every batch?
A supplier who can answer that question in detail has thought about adhesion. A supplier who only quotes thickness has thought about price.
